THE ECONOMIC CRISIS AND THE INCREASE OF UNEMPLOYMENT ARE OPPORTUNITIES FOR LATIN AMERICAN AND HISPANIC WOMEN TO STEP INTO LEADERSHIP.

By Diana Leal

“Today, the recession has had a severe impact on the general population, and in particular on minorities. Latin American and Hispanic populations that live in the United States are experiencing increased unemployment from 5.1% to 8%. In addition, Latin/Hispanic Americans face enormous challenges, but can seize immense opportunities,” says the Founder of Women in Small Biz, Bettina Carey, who was the host of the 2nd Annual Women’s Empowerment Summit™ the 12th and 13th of June in Seattle.

Daughter of Puerto Ricans, Bettina, a passionate follower and ardent supporter of women and their talent as entrepreneurs, regrets how the actual crises has affected the minorities and says “it is painful to see how thousands of Hispanic families are loosing their homes and the effort of many years work after becoming victims of poorly structured mortgage deals. “These situations” says Bettina, “invite us to take action, to get the knowledge and skills and to make the connections we need to take control of our future and our lives.”

“History demonstrates” says Bettina, “times of crisis, with high rates of unemployment, decrease in salaries and increase of anxiety and social discomfort, is usually followed by periods of great creativity in which new companies arise, entrepreneurs innovate, individuals revitalize themselves and faith and confidence increases”.

“It has been in those times of crisis indeed,” according to Bettina, “when women have taken on the leadership role, have left their homes to demonstrate their qualities and capacities to take care of their families.” She adds, “Women have an enormous ability in common: their ability to raise their voices, to make their own decisions to make the difference, to create better opportunities for themselves and their families.”

“Women who have reached a certain level of power will agree that one word, courage–defined as audacity or boldness, describes what it takes to be a leader. “When one faces situations that scare us the fear disappears when we act in spite of our fears” adds the Founder of “Women and Small Biz” and recalls the phrase of Eleanor Roosevelt who said, “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”

Bettina Carey recently gathered one hundred of women their friends, mothers and sisters to participate in the 2nd Annual WORDpower™ Women’s Voice: Women’s Choice Leadership Awards™ Gala June 12, 2009 at the W Seattle Hotel to honor women in her life that she thought were examples of women who are courageous and empowered including:
