He has been part of the lives of generations of viewers, connecting with people of all ages and backgrounds. Now Bob shares stories of favorite contestants, episodes, celebrity encounters, and behind-the-scenes happenings in this engaging memoir, Priceless Memories. 

Passionate Animal Activist

Barker’s support of animal rights has always been a central part of his life, and created professional career problems, notably his anti-fur stand-off with beauty pageants, and his involvement in cases that exposed animal abuse in movies and television. Proceeds from the book sales will go towards DJ&T Foundation, which he founded in 1994 to help foot the bill of spaying and neutering animals.

He is currently crusading to get bears out of bear pits on the Cherokee Reservation in North Carolina, where a concerted effort is planned to negatively impact tourism on the reservation unless they agree to close those horrible pits. Barker, no stranger to reservation life, was born in Darrington, WA, but spent most of his youth on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota where his mother was a schoolteacher.

He will next visit the zoo in Edmonton, Canada, to try and get Lucy, their lone elephant, moved to the Paws Sanctuary in Northern California before winter weather arrives. He and other animal activists were successful in getting an elephant moved from the Los Angeles zoo to that sanctuary about a year ago.

TV Academy Lifetime Achievement Award and winner of 19 Emmys

Beyond his public persona, Bob opens up about his personal life, sharing a lifetime of fond memories. He recalls his early years spent on a Native American reservation, and being raised by a single mother through the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl. He trained as a fighter pilot in the Navy during World War II, and met, fell in love with, and married the love of his life, Dorothy Jo. It was with Dorothy Jo’s encouragement and insight that he launched his career in the entertainment business, starting in radio and moving to television where his work has been honored with 19 Emmys (14 as a performer, the most of any performer ever), induction into the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Hall of Fame, the TV Academy Lifetime Achievement Award, the National Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame and the Pioneer Broadcasters Golden Mike Award, among many other honors. Read Bob Barker's bio.
